Curriculum Maps
One page visual presentations of the knowledge, understanding, and
skills & procedures (KUSP) outcomes for each guiding question in the curriculum. Â Â
Overview
The curriculum maps are intended to provide a useful reference guide to the Knowledge, Understanding, and Skills & Procedures (KUSP's) outcomes for each Guiding Question. The maps include all KUSP outcomes from the March 2023 version of the Alberta K-6 science curriculum (https://curriculum.learnalberta.ca/).
Curriculum Map Organization
Background Colours: In the Alberta science curriculum there are 7 Organizing Ideas (e.g. Matter, Energy, Scientific Methods). The background colours of the maps indicate which Organizing Idea the outcomes align with (e.g. blue = matter, orange = scientific methods).
KUSP Sections: The content of the maps are organized around the key understandings in the curriculum. On the maps you will see sections indicated by different shades of the background colour. Each of these sections is organized with the Understanding outcome at the top and the related Knowledge and Skill/Procedure outcomes listed below it within that colour block. This organization was chosen to highlight how the knowledge and skill/procedure outcomes support students' development of the key science understandings.Â
Outcome Numbering System: The Understanding, Knowledge, and Skills/Procedures outcomes are numbered in the order that they appear in each Guiding Question in the Alberta K-6 Science Curriculum, March 2023 version.
Outcome Groupings: Knowledge and Skill/Procedure outcomes are grouped together based on the similarity and/or relationships between the outcomes. For example, in the Grade 2 - Energy map, "K8: Sources of light include the Sun, electricity, fire, and some plants and animals (bioluminescence)" is grouped with "S6: Identify sources of light."
Outcome Border Colours: Each type of KUSP outcome has been given a different border colour: Black = Understanding outcomes, Blue = Knowledge outcomes, Red = Skill outcomes.Â
Bolded Text: Key words in the outcomes have been bolded to assist with identifying key ideas and skills addressed in the outcomes.
In addition to supporting identification of relationships between outcomes within each guiding question, we also encourage teachers to use these maps to identify connections across the outcomes within each grade level. In particular, the outcomes for Computer Science and Scientific Methods lend themselves to being integrated throughout the year with outcomes related the Matter, Energy, Earth Systems, Living Systems, and Space.
Each map can be (1) previewed, (2) downloaded as a PDF file for printing on 8.5" x 11" paper, or (3) accessed as a modifiable Google Draw file. See instructions below.
